Abstract

This work aims to study personal deixis in Spanish and Arabic from a contrastive approach with a view to translation. The personal deictic elements are personal pronouns, possessives and verbal morphemes of person. First, in the contrastive part we study these personal deictics to trace the points of intersection and difference between both languages in this field. These aspects of similarity and divergence will serve as the basis for the second part of the work, which is dedicated to the descriptive analysis of the translation equivalents of these deictic elements in the Spanish-Arabic language pair and the techniques used in the translation, whether with conservation or omission. This goal is achieved through the study of examples obtained from a corpus consisting of a Spanish play and another Arabic play, both translated into the other language. The dramatic genre has been chosen due to the predominance of deictic signaling in it, in view of its oral and conversational nature. Through the study, the aim is to determine the patterns of regularity in the transmission of these elements.
