Learning Chinese in Egyptian Universities: Challenges & Solutions

Abstract

China's growing economic and cultural influence in Egypt, particularly through the Belt and Road Initiative, is driving a surge in interest in learning Chinese. This growth not only facilitates the deepening of Sino-Egyptian cultural exchanges but also leads to an increasing emphasis on Chinese language education in Egypt, with more and more universities establishing Chinese language departments. While interest in Chinese soars, Egypt's educational resources and initial teacher training haven't fully caught up to meet the challenges this trend presents. This study, through an in-depth observation of the current state of Chinese language education in Egypt and interviews with some local Chinese language teachers, aims to uncover these challenges and explore effective solutions. By addressing the Egyptian learning environment and resource limitations, we aim to develop effective teaching strategies that keep students engaged. By proposing specific and practical strategies, this paper hopes to provide valuable references and insights for the improvement and development of Chinese language education in Egypt.
