Abstract The novel portrays The young Cairo on the plot level, the corruption and decay in Egypt before the July Revolution 1952. Nagib Mahfus focuses mainly on the national, social development concern, but he describes the actions of his protagonists in their real environment and shows their concerns and needs from their perspectives. The novel of Nagib Mahfus, the young Cairo and his the action focuses on the protagonist Mahgub. The protagonist Ali Taha names the philosophers, whom he "threw himself into the arms" itself. It is the "[...] materialistic philosophy [...] of" Hegel, Ostwald, and Mach. "But the protagonist Mahgub has its own philosophy, because he has to answer any questions always the same "nonsense". This response takes place, like a red band through the whole book. Nagib Mahfus describes Mahgub as a human being, who is by nature selfish and unloving. Naguib Mahfus has thus the reader, even to the doctrine of Auguste Comte, positivism and the idea of nationalism as a state to. And he should also askes or begs the question, after the enforcement of new standards, which lead to a change in behavior. Naguib Mahfus became thus a part of the responsibility for the welfare of the people and the state, as it belongs to him as an intellectual and a poet.
